There was snow, wind, good food, presents, and friends, but somehow, it didn't feel like Christmas this year. I think it was because I wasn't in the choir to sing the Christmas Medley. I'd sung that piece every year for 7 years straight ... that is, until now. I'm joining the choir next semester to keep my 'cords in shape. I miss singing really high, really loud, and really (unintentionally, of course) off-pitch.

Snow in Houston. How amazing. It's almost like the weather is glad I'm back from college. Or something.

Oh yeah, Phillip got in an auto accident a week ago.

It's sad that we choose to let friendships melt away. It's so easy to just say hi every once in a while, so easy to smile and wave if our paths cross. But we don't. Maybe we don't because it's so easy. We just don't notice how far people drift in a short time. We keep thinking, "I'll call them tomorrow" every 2-and-a-half weeks. Pretty soon, you notice that though you want to call them, you feel like you're intruding. You may no longer have a place in their lives. You fear coolness and rejection, so you rationalize that they've probably forgotten about you. After all, it's uncomfortable trying to stoke cold ashes. You find yourself ignoring people who you used to approach with "hey, guys", with high-fives and a smile. Eye contact and recognition are avoided with shifty eyes as you pretend to be busy, but you know that your focus is at the margin of your vision. You see them talking to people you don't know, and you think you saw them give you a sidelong glance before walking away. Isn't it sad?
